Poetic Audiology

From stage to page and back again: Studies on the shifting dynamics of “voice” in poetry

The power of an essay blog

Posted by Kenton Stalder on November 25, 2008

This is the first post in a blog that is going to take the shape of a scholarly discussion about the various vocal expressions of poetry. I will be examining, comparing, contrasting, categorizing, constructing, deconstructing and above all learning about poetry in all its forms. From Beowulf to contemporary, from pre written-word to streaming video and from performance poetry to hypertext. I have no idea where I shall end up, but consider the sails unfurled.

I want to start out slow by posting a few of my favorite poems as well as some interesting recordings of poetry that one can find around the web. I’m also going to link a few videos just for good measure. I’m really just experimenting with the tools at my disposal here.

Inua Ellams – The Truth

U.A. Fanthorpe – Master of the Cast Shadow

And if you’re so moved, let me know which was your favorite!
